Active Head Restraints

Active Head Restraints

The active head restraints from Volkswagen are only triggered in the event of a rear-end collision. In such an impact, the upper body is pushed into the seat backrest due to the inertia effects. A mechanism consisting of a back-plate and a rocker lever allows this movement to be harnessed to automatically push the head restraint forward and thereby reduce the distance between the seat occupant's head and the restraint. This is intended to prevent hyperextension of the neck vertebrae, reducing the risk of whiplash injuries. Thanks to the system's reversible design, deployment of the active head restraints does not result in any additional repair costs.
